The Mikado, Eh! - Gamut Theatre
Role
Scene Designer and Technical Director
Project type
Musical Theatre/Operetta
Gamut Theatre Group
November 2025
This production of The Mikado was very unique. Instead of taking place in Japan, it was rewritten to take place in Canada, so the set of course needed to lean into that. Two maple trees, which were frankensteined together from various trees kept in stock, were put around the center arches of the stage. The center stump had a slit cut into the top to fit a prop axe that an actor could pull out at the top of the show. Smaller trees were placed upstage to frame the Canadian Flags that the director had bought and requested to be used for the set. The stage was left intentionally bare besides these elements in order to give the 18 person cast room to move and dance during the group numbers.
