The Pirates of Penzance - Gamut Theatre

Role

Technical Director

Project type

Musical Theatre/Operetta

Gamut Theatre Group

November 2024

This production of The Pirates of Penzance was very unique. The director's vision was that it took place in Blackpool, England in the 1920's and that the pirates were actually a boarding school rowing team called the Pirates and the policemen were actually lifeguards at the beach that Major-General Stanley and his daughters were visiting.

The set was designed and painted by Michael Bush. It was intented to be bare to account for the large cast in such a small space, with only a simple sandy beach paint treatment on the floor and gravestones for Act II. We also rebuilt the railings on the stairs to make them sturdier for the actors and lean into a boardwalk vibe. The main structure here is a permanent aesthetic maintained by Gamut Theatre as their "signiture look"--similar to Shakespeare's Globe.
